Confidence and self-esteem aren’t static traits you either have or don’t have. Rather, they’re qualities that can be cultivated and strengthened over time. One of the most transformative ways to boost these essential aspects of your well-being is through taking action.
Here, we’ll explore the connection between action and self-assurance, highlighting how voluntarily stepping into the unknown can be the catalyst for building unshakeable confidence and a robust sense of self-esteem.
How Does Action Help to Build Confidence?
There’s a famous Chinese proverb that says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a simple step.” The truth is that taking the first step, no matter how small, is often the hardest part. Yet, overcoming the inertia of inaction is crucial to starting your journey and breaking the cycle of self-doubt. Taking the first step is also the key for building momentum that can lead to lasting confidence.
It’s also important to realize that confidence is not just a mindset. It’s the result of real-world experience. In other words, without DOING something, you’ll never be able to see what’s possible. By taking action, you expose yourself to new challenges and opportunities. These experiences provide the means for getting tangible evidence of your capabilities.
What Makes Action a Catalyst for Increased Self-Esteem?
Every action, no matter how small, contributes to a sense of accomplishment. Each accomplishment then becomes a building block for your self-esteem, reinforcing the belief in your abilities.
Taking action can also involve stepping outside of your comfort zone. This leads to continuous opportunities for learning and growth. When you embrace challenges and learn from various experiences, it enhances self-esteem because you can easily see how you’re evolving and adapting.
Practical Steps to Help Build Confidence and Self-Esteem Through Action
Now that you know why action is the building block for improving confidence and self-esteem, how do you actually get into action?
1. Start by setting achievable goals.
This does NOT mean you can’t achieve big things. What it DOES mean is that big goals should be broken down into smaller goals that are easy to achieve. Big goals that feel insurmountable are only a stumbling block to taking action. When they’re broken down into smaller, manageable tasks, however, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment upon completion which then fuels more confidence.
2. Learn to view challenges as opportunities.
Too many people view challenges as reasons to NOT get into action. When you learn to embrace them, however, you’ll see that they’re actually opportunities to prove your capabilities and resilience.
3. Understand that failures and setbacks WILL happen.
No one is absolutely perfect and that means failures and setbacks will come along from time to time. That’s okay! It’s all part of the process and the truth is, you can sometimes learn more from failures than successes. When you view setbacks as opportunities for growth, it’ll be much easier to get into action and stay in action. And, as you grow and experience positive change as a result of failure, your self-esteem and confidence will increase.
